This Thursday, September 13th is the opening day for the big annual feast of San Gennaro. This is an exciting time and a fascinating piece of New York history. Gotham New York Limo Service would like to fill you in on what the Feast of San Gennaro entails and give some advice on how to enjoy it.

History

The feast was first celebrated on September 19th, 1926 by the newly arrived immigrants from Naples. This celebration is a traditional rememberance of Saint Gennaro who was martyred in 305 A.D. The immigrants celebrated in New York by throwing a huge one day long feast. It features a Religious Procession as well as a Celebratory Mass at the shrine of San Gennaro, the Most Precious Blood Church.

Happenings

There are a few different events that take place during the celebration like the Annual Cannoli Eating Contest that takes place on the 13th from 2-3pm. On the same day Parish Priests from the Most Precious Blood Church walk through the streets blessing shops, venders, restaurants, and cafes. The Grand Procession is on the 14th starting at 2pm. This is a large and colorful parade filled with floats, entertainers, bands, and a statue of San Gennaro. The 19th is the official feast day that boasts a day of eating, Mass at 5pm and the Religious Procession at 6pm.

What To Do

There are a vast number of things to do at the Feast, but it can get overwhelming. There are many Italian restaurants around the city that have specials for lunch or dinner. You can even hire a New York Limo to drive you around and get you where you need to go. There are musical performances around the area that you can stop and listen to or even enjoy a carnival game on the side. Let’s not forget all of the amazing food. You can find everything from fried oreos to sausage and peppers. There are many Italian favorites like tiramisu, gelato, pork braciole, zeppole, and even Mostaccioli Riepeni.

Tips

Pace your eating, there is so much to try that if you aren’t careful you will be full long before you run out of things to try. You can even share foods with others.
