The Royal Ballet of Cambodia Comes to New York City

The Royal Ballet of Cambodia has played host to a number of famous faces throughout the years; including but not limited to former President Richard Nixon in the 70s. Now the Royal Ballet of Cambodia is coming to New York, and we have the pleasure of watching this dance in our own city. Don’t miss out on this historic performance that gives you a taste of traditional Thai culture.

This traditional Ballet was created in Cambodia in order to honor the Thai gods and deities and also to provide entertainment for the Thai royals and their guests. The dancers perform classic Thai dances and are performed in a public court for everyone to witness. Their costumed are designed after traditional Thai attire, with heavy gold headdresses and gold accessories. As time as gone on, the Ballet has added many new additions to their dance routines and minor changes to their costumes to reflect the changing times in Cambodia. In the past, members of the Thai royal family have not been allowed to perform, however in more recent times Princesses have been present in the Royal Ballet of Cambodia and have even choreographed some of the dances.

The Royal Ballet of Cambodia’s performance in New York consists of 20+ dancers and four to five singers who are sure to deliver a moving performance that will bring the audience deep into Thai culture. The intricate dance tells a mystical story of the origins of Cambodia. Simple hand gestures and the use of the smallest parts of the body are considered significant in the Royal Ballet of Cambodia; every movement has a meaning. The Royal Ballet of Cambodia will pull you in and give you a true understanding of Thai culture and their beliefs and history. The performance will be held at the Brooklyn Academy of Arts and everyone is welcome.
